Awards FAIL: You Call Those WEB Celebs?

Posted in Broadcast Assassin by jeffkoenig on November 10, 2009

People like Twilight, True Blood, and Taylor Swift. This is not news, and a look through the nominees for the 2010 People’s Choice Awards reveals very few surprises.

There is one category, however, that sticks out as blatantly uninformed and hopelessly out of touch: the nominees for Favorite Web Celeb.

In what amounts to a complete disregard for any understanding of what actually constitutes online entertainment, the nominees that we, the people will have to choose from are:

  • Andy Samberg
  • Miley Cyrus
  • Ashton Kutcher
  • Will Ferrell
  • P. Diddy

While I don’t want to belittle the enormous contributions to online entertainment (*snikker*) made by the likes of Cyrus and Diddy, Broadcast Assassin presents our suggestion for the list of real Web Celebs, not just mainstream A-listers who think Twitter is kinda neat.

Felicia Day

Felicia Day

Insanely popular star and creator of the insanely popular The Guild.

Other notable appearances: The Legend of Neil, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

Craig Frank

Craig Frank

Star of the upcoming Compulsions, Craig has basically been in every web series, ever.

Other notable appearances: The Crew, Private High Musical, Craig and the Werewolf

Taryn Southern

Taryn Southern

Hayden Black

Hayden Black

Other notable appearances: He has time to be in other people’s shows?

Dennis Haskins

Dennis Haskins

Other notable appearances: Yep, that’s Mr. Belding from Saved By The Bell. He’s a web series guy now!

-Broadcast Assassin out!

I found it completely astounding that P Diddy and Ashton Kutcher got on that list for NOTHING BUT TWEETING. And Miley Cyrus just *barely* one-upped them by, what? Oh yeah, making a web video *about* (not using) Twitter. I have no qualms with Andy Samberg being on the list, and I don’t really have an opinion as far as Will Ferrell goes, but yeah, the other three definitely should not be on there. I think there may be better choices then Dennis Haskins and possibly Hayden Black as well, but I heartily agree with the rest of your list. The true definition of web celebs should involve far more than just filling up your 140 characters a couple dozen times a day.

I actually do agree that Andy Samberg is a little more appropriate, although he loses points because his viral web based “digital shorts” always premier on broadcast TV first. Ferrell owns a a web video company.

Still, part of what I was going for was that no one on this list is a) a celeb who first became famous for their work on the web, or b) does most, if not all of their work on the web.

Haskins made the list because even though he became “famous” for a broadcast TV show, he’s embraced web tv full time (with Private High Musical and ASA) in a way that others like Lisa Kudrow, Bill Shatner, Sheri Oteri, Rosario Dawson, etc aren’t. Where the latter occasionally vacation on the web, Haskins appears to have moved in and is working to improve the status of the neighborhood.

Thanks so much for the comment!

Great Choices. And love your comments about Mr. B improving the neighborhood, as well as bringing some past network glory juice to draw attention to and up the neighborhood values. How about your own awards that we can all vote on?

Great job on the list Jeff. and Yes! Mr. B totally deserves to be on the list. I think we’re just beginning to see what’s in store for him.
